Trying the 45° makeup technique

Tal vez se pregunten qué es esto de la técnica de los 45°, de una forma muy simplista lo puedo explicar diciendo que se trata de aplicar todo el maquillaje de forma diagonal, a 45° de inclinación.  Me encontré con esta técnica en el blog de Kate (Drivel about Frivol) y de ahí en from the Land of Lorp –un maravilloso descubrimiento que estoy incluyendo en mi #BlogLinkLove).  Ambas lo tomaron de la revista Maquia –revista japonesa con diagramas para diferentes técnicas, algo así como un paraíso para a quien le gusta ñoñear en los temas del maquillaje.  Cuando empecé a ver los diagramas, me pregunté por qué no hay de este tipo de revistas en México, aunque después recordé que es por el mismo motivo por el cual no traen Hakuhodo: tendrían muy pocos clientes, o tal vez sólo yo.  En fin, decidí sacar mi ñoñez e intentar esta técnica que en realidad está pensando para el público japonés aun cuando sé que la forma de mi ojo dista mucho de la más común allá.  Después de todo, ¿¿¿qué es más ñoño que intentar una técnica que no está hecha para tu forma de ojo???  Hice dos experimentos usando tonos de las Illusion d’Ombre de Chanel y delineadores de Bobbi Brown.  Pese a que la técnica se trata de usar formas diagonales en todo el rostro, la realidad es que en este caso me enfoqué más en los ojos debido a que me di cuenta que en mi maquillaje habitual ya uso formas diagonales, así que no se notaría tanto.  Espero en el caso de los ojos sea más evidente.

You may be wondering what’s that 45° technique, right?  Well, in a very simplistic way I would say it’s placing all your makeup in a diagonal (45°) way.  I first saw this at Kate’s fabulous blog (Drivel about Frivol, you can see it here) and then I also checked From the Land of Lorp –a new discovery that I’m adding to my #BlogLinkLove list.  They both tried it from Maquia magazine –a Japanese magazine that seems like heaven for all makeup geeks.  When I started seeing all of this, I asked myself why these sorts of magazines aren’t sold here in Mexico, but then I realized it’s the same reason why Hakuhodo brushes aren’t sold here: they would probably just have a few customers, or maybe just me.  Anyway, I decided to take out my truly geeky me and try this technique meant for Japanese crowd even when I’m fully aware my eye shape is far from theirs, just for the sake of mu science.  After all, what’s geekier than trying a technique meant for eyes that are not your shape???  I did two experiments mostly using some shades of Chanel Illusion d’Ombre and Bobbi Brown gel eyeliner.  Even when the technique is all your makeup, I realized I already do diagonal contouring and my lips have natural somehow diagonal shapes, so the difference isn’t very noticeable.  However, it does look different on eyes, so that’s why I’m focusing on that. 

45° EOTD #1: High Contrast

Este fue el primer intento y empezó como un gran caos (empezando por mi japonés nivel -1) aunque terminó en algo que me encantó.  Usé las Illusion d’Ombre en los tonos Convoitise (dorado frío pálido) y Fatal (borgoña morado) para la aplicación diagonal, Convoitise hacia el lagrimal y Fatal hacia el acento.  Empecé a hacer el delineado con el Carpates de Nars, pero ya me di cuenta que ahora si es momento del retiro y tuve que rellenar con el Black Ink de Bobbi Brown.  Los dos rabillos los difuminé con la sombra No. 135 (Gris Romantique) de Couleur Caramel.

This was my first essay and it started as a huge mess but ended up with something I really loved.  I used Convoitise (pale cool gold) and Fatal (plum burgundy) Illusion d’Ombre on the diagonal placement –Convoitise on inner corner, Fatal on outer corner.  Did the eyeliner first with Nars Carpates, but it’s definitely ready for retirement, so had to place Bobbi Brown Gel Ink on top and then I did the outer shade to buff the double wing with Couleur Caramel no. 135 (Gris Romantique). 

Creo que me quedaron ojos de anime!  Se veían tan grandes y adoré que aun cuando es una técnica que no está pensada para mi forma de ojo, funcionó.  También me pareció bastante favorecedora para las que usamos lentes, ya que los ojos no se pierden detrás de los lentes.

I got anime-like eyes!!! They just looked so big; I just loved it and even when it’s not meant for my eye shape I love the result.  I found it’s also flattering for those who wear glasses, since it’s still noticeable even when wearing them –I always find glasses hide eyes, but not with this look.

45° EOTD #2: Subtle Contrast

Usé los mismos pasos del intent anterior, pero con tonos que tienen menor contraste entre sí. De las Illusion d’Ombre, usé Emerveille (durazno claro) en lugar de Convoitise, e Initiation (bronce) en lugar de Fatal, también cambie el delineador Black ink por el Sepia ink (café oscuro) y para difuminar los rabillos en esta ocasión usé el tono Faint de Urban Decay (de la paleta Naked Basics).

I did exactly the same I did in #1 try, but with less contrasting shades.  I took Emerveille (light sparkly peach) instead of Convoitise, and Initiation (bronze) instead of Fatal, I also used Sepia Ink instead of Black Ink, I then buffed the outer wings with Urban Decay Faint (from Naked basics palette).

Quedo lindo pero no maravilloso.  Parece ser que reducir el contraste hace del look lindo pero nada impresionante.  Tampoco tengo la impresión de que mis ojos se vean mucho más grandes.

It’s nice but not amazing.  Seems the lower contrast just makes the final look nice but not stunning.  I also don’t feel I got anime eyes but my regular almond still somehow big eyes.

I highly recommend reading Technique-Testing Tuesday: 45º Diagonal Makeup from Drivel about Frivol and Maquia September 2013 – part 1 from the land of lorp, but in order to help here is some advice:

1. Esta técnica funciona mejor si usas tonos que contrasten mucho.
2. Cuando vean las imágenes escaneadas de From the Land of Lorp, acuérdense que el japonés se escribe de derecha a izquierda (no de izquierda a derecha como se lee en español).  A mí se me olvidó y empecé por el paso 18 y ya cuando iba en el 20, me di cuenta que me había saltado del 11 al 17.
3. Trataré de hacer un diagrama que explique esto –sólo no puedo prometer cuando.
4. La idea de usar dos tonos aplicados de forma diagonal no es exclusiva de Asia, de hecho se usa en varios looks de alfombra roja.  A mí me enseñaron ese tipo de sombreado en mis clases de automaquillaje hace ya un tiempo, lo interesante me parece es el doble delineado.
5. Lo que me pareció más complicado fue el delineador con rabillo inferior, ya que no se parece al que yo solía hacer (éste es más diagonal).
6. Esta técnica funciona mejor si delineas por dentro del centro hacia afuera del ojo.

1. It works better if you use high contrasting shades.
2. When taking looking at the images scanned, please take notice that Japanese is read from right to left.  Be aware of that, I forgot it and started with step #18 and by #20 I realized I was missing from #11 to #17 that was in the right part of the sheet. 
3. I will try to do a diagram explaining what I understood about this –just can’t promise when.
4. The idea of using two shades in a diagonal placement isn’t Asia exclusive; in fact it’s used in many red carpets.  I was thought the eyeshadow placement in my self-makeup lessons some time ago, so the interesting part (for me) is the eyeliner.
5. The most difficult part for me was the lower lash wing, I have no idea why.
6. This technique works better if you tightline the outer corner of your eye.

Conclusión: esta es una técnica maravillosa para las que usan lentes, sólo asegúrate de usar tonos que contrasten.

Bottom line: This is a great technique for those who wear glasses, just make sure to use contrasting shades.
